Congratulations, Zach!

My mind is cluttered already. That doesn’t mean the year will be bad, it’s just annoying. Every day is a new chance to start over and my mind said “Not today.” That’s O.K.

I got Digital Ash In A Digital Urn today. I’m listening to it now and I have to say it’s not what I expected. It seems like every day I learn and re-learn not to judge a book by a cover. Especially if you’re judging one book by another’s cover. All that’s to say I like it.

  Bright Eyes’ art director, Zack Nipper, has been nominated for a Grammy for the Cassadaga album art. If you haven’t seen it, it really is worth seeing. I’m sure someone you know owns it. Right? RIGHT?! It’s definitely one of the best concepts I’ve ever seen in album art. It looked like a lot of fuzz, but inside, there is a “spectral decoder” that sort of reminds me of a Ouija board thing. The grey mess turns into awesome pictures and text. I think it deserves to win.  There were a lot of people who were all ga-ga over TOOL’s album art (not nominated, by the way), which I thought was lame. It was just 3-D and it didn’t go with the album at all. It seemed just to be a marketing scheme and people ate that shit up. Also, the whole “there are secrets in my album art” crap gets old. Secrets? Why?

Zack says,

Best Album: Everyone HAS to have one of these. Mine is Cassadaga by Bright Eyes. This album took a bit to grow on me. I saw the show WAY before I heard the whole album. All by choice, I thought it was boring at first. By now it’s probably the album I’ve listened to most in it’s first year. Love it.I thought Rilo Kiley would be in this spot this year, but I just could never get into the new album.

Best Memories Made:
1) Devil’s Point, for most fun. It’s a Suicide Girl type strip club in Portland,OR. Stormy (a SG) was dancing that night. Jon wore her bikini top. She took ice from my mouth and rubbed it all over her.And it was 80’s night. And drinks were cheap. I got sick. Fucking right.
2) Veruca Salt show at The Parish in New Orleans. Lots of fun. Gary, Ray and I hanging out like old times.

Best Movie( I saw for the first time): Benny and Joon

Best Book: The Time Traveler’s Wife

And now for the real best part. I went through my photos and found 49 to chronicle the year. There’s no way to fit a whole year inside 49 photos, but it’s way better than words. Interestingly enough, my two favorite memories don’t have photos to accompany them. So it goes. Anyway, here they are.
