I did end up going to Electric Six last night a the Spanish Moon (thanks Daniel!). The show was fantastic, as usual. This makes my fourth time seeing them live, and I’m still not sick of it. They had some decent opening bands, too.
We Are the Fury, although I still felt like I was waiting for E6, was pretty awesome. Mick Jagger must have died, because the singer was SO him reincarnated. I felt a little bad for him when he begged people to come to the stage and no one moved. By the third time, a few people came and stood 5 feet from the stage. Poor guy. The lack of crowd enthusiasm would overflow into the Electric Six show, too.
The Willowz was a decent band. The vocalist was a mumbler and the bassist was a showoff. Being a showoff isn’t a bad thing until you start doing cheesy things with a look on your face like you’re doing something awesome. They did make me think that grunge might be coming back soon. There was long stringy, unwashed hair. There was flannel. There was a girl NOT wearing footless tights! How exciting! Before long, we may all be able to skip a shower and get away with it.
Then comes the long wait for Electric Six. Well worth it. They came out less dressed up than usual, Dick Valentine wearing a shiny purple cape with “Showtime” in bold letters on the back. I have a video of him ripping it off for “Dance Commander” if I can figure out how to improve the sound of it. We were directly under the speakers, so it sounded like shit. It’s pretty much a bunch of noise. I made about 4 or 5 videos, mostly of him saying silly things but you can’t even hear them. if I can figure out how to separate the sound from the video, I can probably fix it in Audacity or Pro Tools or something.
They rocked, as usual. Dick Valentine took the liberty of informing us of Larry King’s death, immediately before starting “Dance Pattern”. He talked with us about our local politics, his plan to keep a Bush in office (a good plan, at that) and what a shitty town Houston is.
I think the Spanish Moon may have disappointed him with their refusal to sing the end of “Germans in Mexico”. It was fun, but I think I still prefer to see them at The Parish.
