Just for Jesus
December 6th, 2007 by Tabatha
There was a Just for Jesus rally last night in Baton Rouge. I don’t know how, but it’s an excused absence for kids in school. Somehow this guy convinced the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board to even TRANSPORT these kids to this rally. He says he has it Deliberately during school hours to:
…prod public schools to treat Christian events like his as no different from traditional field trips to museums and theater performances.
I’m lost for a good reason why it should be treated as a field trip to a museum or a theater performance. Unless it was a religious studies course, it has nothing to do with school as either of those would.
One parent that had to (god forbid) drop her child off at the rally says:
“More schools should have made it a field trip,” she said. “They’ve taken God out of the schools and put it on the parents.”
To me, that’s a lot like saying “They took potty training out of the schools and put it on the parents.” That’s where it belongs; on the parents.
I’m all for kids going to this. In fact, I suggested that my grandparents allow my younger cousin to attend. I think your faith is worth a missed day of school, but I don’t believe it should be excused. I can’t even make up educational field trips for my son and have them excused by the school board. Why should a religious rally be considered a field trip? It has absolutely nothing o do with school.
I wish I could just say “OK Seth, lets skip school today and go learn about modern art at the LSU Museum of Art.” But I can’t. I’s up to the school to plan a field trip that is relevant to what the kids are learning at the time, and I understand that. We’ll just go on Saturday. Hint hint, Just for Jesus people.
